Blue Spruce Cottages

This year’s Blue Spruce weekend’s timing co-incided with excellent winter and Cross Country Ski conditions, much better than we have had for years. The combination of warmer weather, lots of snow coupled with the comradeship of the Trakkers family make for a great weekend.

Looking out the window, over the snowman down to the frozen lake was very peaceful and relaxing experience. The big snowflakes falling from the sky, were like memories of the first snow back in the day. Enjoying the time with the members of the extended Trakkers family whom individually made an effort to make it enjoyable, truly was the icing on the cake. When can I sign up for it again for next year?

March Broadcast

Hello Fellow Trakkers !

This could be the greatest skiing season in a long time. There is still plenty of snow in ski country. We could be running buses until the beginning of April if this wonderful winter weather stays with us !

We have had 2 buses every week-end. It looks like it will be the case again this Sunday. Don’t forget to sign up before 9 pm tonight !

Tell your friends that we are offering a reduced membership fee for people who would like to join Trakkers for the balance of the season. A great deal given the fact that we seem to be heading for a protracted season ! Send them the www.trakkers.ca link.

On March 28, we will have a gala evening combining our Annual General Meeting and Year-End Dinner. We will also honor a few long-standing members of Trakkers and share this year’s stories. It will be held at the Swansea Town Hall (95 Lavinia Avenue). Click here for more details. I will be selling tickets on the bus until March 23.

You will receive shortly a formal notice, a nomination and consent form as well as a proxy form for the AGM. Please do not hesitate to put your name forward if you like to be part of the executive board next year. A nomination committee is currently putting a slate of candidates. Contact me if you would like to help us next year. Any member can also run for a position during the AGM.

Our photo contest has been a great success. It also generated a huge increase in the popularity of our Facebook page. This week, we are offering a $ 50.00 MEC gift certificate for the best picture of the season. Thank you to Christina and Carolyn for organising the contest this year!

During the off-season, we organise events once a month (hike, bike-ride, visit etc.). Let me know if you would like to lead such an activity.

We are seeking your input or recommendation on a destination (resort, cottages) for the next ski season, preferably within say 2.5 hours drive from Toronto. We are thinking of trying the Parry Sound area, or over in the Kawartha or Haliburton area.  Please send your suggestions to: weekendtrips@trakkers.ca

In Memoriam

Jack Porter, the club president during the early years when we were with the Y, and again when we went independent in 1986 has died.

PORTER, Jack – Suddenly, at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Toronto, on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, Mr. John Charles Porter of Toronto, in his 66th year. He will be remembered by his brothers Robert and Carmen Porter of London, and Doug and Pat Porter of Listowel, and by his extended family. Private family services have been entrusted to the Eaton Funeral Home, Listowel.

Jack probably stopped skiing with the club in the early 90’s, so would not be known to most members. I remember him best for the trips he ran to Jay Peak, Vermont, where he taught me the joys and rewards of bushwacking. A wonderful organizer and leader for the club in its early years, and has a well deserved place on the Bernie Award.

Two buses again this Sunday!

Great 4 km snowshoe hike lead by Bruce Smith. Eleven Trakkers participated. The kids had a lot of fun in the deep snow!

After a few strides along the trail, Kevin broke one of his bindings. He had a great day on rentals nonetheless!

Huge Snow Base at Hardwood!

Another great trip this Sunday. Hardwood had received another 20 cm of fresh snow before we arrived!
This was our 4th straight Sunday with 2 buses. One member found a novel idea to get to the bus on time:

President’s February Blog

Hello Fellow Trakkers

This winter has been great for skiing ! We have had 4 straight Sundays with 2 buses with approximately 90 participants in total. We even reached the 100 mark on January 26! We currently have approximately 161 members. We seem to have attracted new and keen members this year (67) as some of them show up at nearly every trip. A few of those new members even invite friends on our trips every week.

The Kawartha Nordic Trip was very successful. A lovely get-together with wine and cheese offered by the club at the end of the day gave us a chance to mingle. A wonderful way to finish a superb day of skiing. colin pascoeWe heard with sadness this month the passing of Colin Pascoe. Colin was a Trakkers member for many years. We will miss him on the trail. 20140203-055739.jpgGood luck to the 4 fellow Trakkers who will take part in the Canadian Ski Marathon on February 8 and 9. The event consists of 80 or 180 km of skiing over 2 days! There are 10 sections over the 2 days: Coureurs des Bois ski the whole 10 sections (160km), Half Marathon skiers do the last 3 sections each day and finally the Touring Category is the one where you define your own  distance/sections.

arrowhead

On Sunday, February 16 (Family Week-End), we will have a special trip to Arrowhead Provincial Park (near Huntsville). We will leave the usual pick-up point at 8:00 am because it is a little further away. Great scenery, abundant snow and beautiful trails have made this outing a favourite among many members in the past. Due to the higher bus costs  and to ensure the club does not take a big loss for that trip, we will first open registration for only 56 members (one bus). If we get sufficient interest, registration for a second bus will then be made available on line. If you do not register in time for the first bus during the week preceding the trip, send an email to sundaytrips@trakkers.ca indicating that you would like to be placed on a waiting list. Given the great participation in our trips this year, we are confident that we can successfully organize 2 buses. Bus fare and trail fees for this trip will be altogether $42.00 (1 voucher or 1 online payment + $21 cash at the bus); $46.00 cash only; and $25 for children.  This is exactly same price as when we go skiing at Hardwood ($21 bus fare + $21 trail pass).

Our Photo Contest has generated a lot of activity on our Facebook page. Continue to submit your best photo on the club’s Facebook page. You might win one of the wonderful prizes that are being offered this year.

We are looking for people who would like to serve on next year’s executive board. This is a great way to get involved with the club and get to know other members. If you are interested contact Xavier.
