January President’s Broadcast

Hello Trakkers!

The ski season is in full swing and we’ve already had some wonderful trips to Hardwood Hills, Scenic Caves and Horseshoe! Don’t let the lack of snow in Toronto fool you — there’s tons up north for us to enjoy!

Calling all Shutterbugs!

The Trakkers Photo Contest is back and we have some great prizes lined up, courtesy of MEC! To participate, each week Trakkers members can post one favourite photo on the Trakkers Facebook page. Members and their friends can vote on any photo by “liking”. Winning photos will be determined based on the number of “likes” received that week.

See Trakkers Photo Contest page for detailed rules and weekly prize schedule.

Meet Our New Ski School Instructors-in-Training!

This season we’re delighted to announce that we have three members in the club who are in training to become CANSI-certified instructors: Anita Elash, Hilary Linton, and John van Nostrand. Each has already completed the pre-Level 1 CANSI training and will be assisting with lessons as they gear up for their Level 1 testing. Please join me in welcoming them to our Ski School!

We also continue to do active promotion for anyone interested in becoming an instructor, in order to keep up with demand for lots of beginner lessons, as well as intermediate and skating. There is usually a full day CANSI pre-Level 1 introductory course for potential instructors in December of every year that people can use to improve their own skills and get feedback as to what to work on to go forward. The cost is only about $80, well worth the
investment even if only to improve your own skills. There is no pressure, as there is no pass/fail for this intro course. Check out courses for next season later this year on the CANSI web site.

If you’d like to consider becoming a volunteer instructor please contact Steve Favell, Ski School Coordinator, at or 416-233-5324. For anyone who completes the Level I training and commits to teach with Trakkers for a period of time, the club reimburses the costs of the CANSI training and certification, and covers trail/bus fees while teaching as an incentive.

Weekend Trips – Guests Now Welcome for Blue Spruce!

We still have spots available for both of our upcoming weekend trips to Blue Spruce (February 6-8) and Pine Vista (February 20-22).

Registration for the Blue Spruce trip has also now been opened up to guests of members who have signed up for the trip. If you know of anyone else who might be interested in joining that trip please invite them along!

Blue Spruce is a favourite destination for the club, with two ski areas — Algonquin park (west gate) and Arrowhead – only a short drive away. Cost per space is $130 each.

Pine Vista is a new resort we’re trying this year, close to Kawartha Provincial Park and Kawartha Nordic Cross-Country ski trails. Cost per person is $110.

Interested? Email Henry, our Weekend Trip Coordinator, at, or see more details on our web site.

Mark Your Calendars – February 22 Wine and Cheese and March 27 AGM/Year-End Dinner

This year’s wine and cheese will be held at Scenic Caves on February 22. Come out and join us to toast the mid-point of our ski season!

Our Annual General Meeting and Year-End Dinner will be held on Friday, March 27, at Swansea Town Hall. We’ll have a brief ADM/business portion of the evening to start, and then lots of time for a leisurely dinner and socializing! Tickets for the dinner will begin to be sold in mid-February. Official agenda and AGM materials will be posted to the members-only section of the Trakkers web site in late February.

Interested in Volunteering?

Trakkers is 100% by a volunteer Board of Directors and a dedicated group of members who love to ski — and who want to give the gift of skiing to others!

As we head into our Annual General Meeting and elect board members for our 2015-16 ski season, we’re looking to recruit a few new members for some board vacancies. Positions for which we are looking for volunteers include Secretary, Weekend Trips Coordinator, Publicity Coordinator and Sunday Trips Assistant positions.

Being on the board involves participating in one meeting per month (September to April), and approximately three hours of volunteer time each week while we are skiing (January to March). Being on the board is provides a great opportunity to see the inside workings of the club and to give something back.

If you are interested in joining the board — or otherwise volunteering to support the club — please contact myself,  Florence de Lannoy, or Henry Furlott.

Keep on trakkin! — and remember to follow us on Facebook or Twitter, or keep an eye on our web site, to get the latest updates.
