It was a fantastic season this year — tons of snow and very full buses for most of our Sunday Trips! Our annual survey is now out and the club is organizing off-season activities and social events through the summer and fall — see below and keep an eye on Facebook and Twitter for more details.
Annual General Meeting and Year-End Dinner
The Trakkers AGM on March 27, 2015 was well-attended, with more than 50 members coming out to support the club’s governance and election of the board for next season. The AGM business was very straightforward and included presentations of the club’s operational and financial reports. The club’s financial statement and draft minutes from the meeting are now available in the members-only area of the Trakkers web site.
Thanks go out to all the volunteers who helped make the evening such a success, and a special thanks to Helen Flint, who was our chair for the meeting.
The awards portion of the AGM was conducted during the dessert course. Bruce Smith, the club’s awards coordinator, presented 30-year membership awards to Jannette Porter and Lawrence Rennie. The Ski School Award this year was shared between two members, and Steve Favell, Ski School Coordinator announced that the recipients were Han Zhang and Sam Tosaria.
By tradition, the club also has two other annual awards: the Bernie Award and the Broken Ski. The identification of the Broken Ski recipient is easy — it always goes to the club President, in recognition of the club’s thanks for them taking on the task.
The Bernie Award, for those who are newer members in the club, has a special origin:
Who was Bernie? — Bernie Lukasik was very active in the Club in the 1980s and 1990s. Even when he was not on the board, he gave a helping hand wherever needed. His input was always constructive. While Bernie was alive, he awarded the trophy annually to a member who had contributed in a similar fashion. The inscription on the actual trophy reads: “The Bernie Award for outstanding contribution”.
How is the Bernie recipient selected? — Bernie passed away in 1997, but the club has continued the award in his memory. After his death a sub-committee of the board selected the recipient. Then in 2012 the executive asked that a sub-committee of previous recipients be asked to make the selection, in consultation with other club veterans.
This year’s Bernie Award went to Nathalie Auger:
Off-Season Social Events
Plans are well underway for the annual “Spokes and Spigots” biking and winery tour in Niagara Region (likely in July).
The board is also looking to hear from members who may be interested in helping to organize other events this summer and fall. In previous years we’ve done kayaking / canoeing, day hikes, picnics on the Island, other cycling adventures and a sake tour! Got an idea for a fun Trakkers outing during the summer or fall? Contact Michelle, our Social Events Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Trakkers Annual Membership Survey
What’s your favourite Sunday Trips destination? Are there other Weekend Trips destinations that you’d like, or do you want a longer trip? What’s the best thing about the club, or where could we improve?
The Trakkers annual survey is now online and the board wants your feedback to help inform planning for next season — cause really, it’s never too late to be thinking about snow 🙂
Keep on trakkin!
