September President’s Broadcast

Hello Trakkers!

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful summer season and enjoyed as much time playing outside as possible.

The club is now officially gearing up for the 2015-16 ski season — and we can’t wait to see you all again on the trails. Early bird membership is open, dates are now confirmed for our Open House and weekend trips, and we’ve got some fun social events lined up through the fall. Plus we’ve got opportunities to volunteer with the club!

Early Bird Membership is Now Open!

Don’t delay – renew your membership before September 30 and take advantage of our early bird rate. Membership is $70 until the end of the September, after which it goes up to $75 until the end of November, and then $8o. Membership includes free lessons from our CANSI-certified instructors, one free Sunday bus fare (a $27 value), and access to all the club’s social events.

Returning members should log in to their member account. New members simply fill out our online membership application.

Please note that membership renewal is a two-step process: after completing payment, confirmation of informed consent and assumption of risk is also required for our insurance purposes. This step is available from your member account, after you’ve logged in.

Mark Your Calendars for the Annual Open House — November 20

Hold the date to come out and reconnect with members in anticipation of the upcoming season, sign up for weekend trips, or just find out more about the club! Light refreshments will be served and we’ll have some wonderful door prizes!

Friday, November 20, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Swansea Town Hall, 95 Lavinia Avenue

Get Ready for Adventure! — Trakkers Weekend Trips

Each year the club does three weekend trips to popular ski destinations. This year’s line-up of weekend trips is as follows:

January 15-17, 2016 – The Woolner House, Highlands Nordic
February 5-7, 2016 – Blue Spruce Resort, near to both Algonquin and Arrowhead
February 19-21, 2016 – Pine Vista Resort, near to Kawartha Nordic

Registration for our weekend trips will open at our Open House on November 20. This year the club will also have an online credit card payment option for weekend trips.

Check the Weekend Trips page on our web site for more details.

Finally, the club is continuing to assess interest from our members about a longer trip option (3 days or longer), so we could go farther afield. If you’d be interested in taking part in a longer trip option with the club — and/or have any specific destinations in mind — please get in touch with Barb Woods, our Weekend Trips Coordinator.

Volunteer Opportunities with the Club – Social Media Content Coordinator and Awards Coordinator

Social Media Content Coordinator

Do you enjoy reading skiing, snowshoeing and outdoorsy articles online through Facebook, Twitter and the larger blogosphere? Have any experience with writing articles or social media content? Why not consider volunteering as our Social Media Content Coordinator?

Key duties for this non-executive volunteer position include:

  • identifying relevant online content that would be of interest to Trakkers members;
  • acting as the club’s “roving reporter” to develop brief original content for the Trakkers blog — this could include anything from writing articles about the club’s social events, developing profiles of Trakkers members, recipe ideas, book reviews — we’re open to ideas and this is a great way to meet other members in the club!; and,
  • supporting the club’s Communications Director to cross-promote relevant online content through Trakkers’ social media presence (Facebook, Twitter)

Time commitment is approximately 1-2 hours per week. Optimally we’re looking for someone who is online/social media savvy, and training will be provided on the specific social media tools used by the club (WordPress, Tweetdeck, etc.). Email if interested or you want to know more.

Awards Coordinator

The club is looking for a new Awards Coordinator, as Bruce Smith is retiring. Bruce has quietly (and with great precision behind the scenes) kept tabs on how long everyone has been in the club for six years now, and while we’re sad to have him step down, we now have a wonderful volunteer opportunity available for another keen Trakkers member!

Key duties for this non-executive volunteer position include:

  • reviewing the club’s membership history records (file is in Excel) to identify long-service award recipients (i.e., members who have been in the club for 20 or 30 years). This sounds like it could be a lot of work, but it really isn’t — it’s basically just scanning the Excel file to figure out which members are coming up to which anniversary dates and then doing some bi-annual clean-up of records. (Bruce will still be around to assist, if necessary);
  • conferring with the club’s board executive and/or other members to identify the annual recipient of the Bernie Award — again, not a ton of work; involves a few emails back and forth each year;
  • updating the two Trakkers trophies (the Broken Ski and Bernie awards) with recipients’ names on a yearly basis — note: the new coordinator will need to identify a Toronto-based engraving shop to replace our current Orangeville supplier and make all arrangements to get the trophies updated; and,
  • presenting the annual awards at the Trakkers Year-End Dinner — the really fun public part where we get to celebrate our fantastic members!

At the same time, new proposals for recognition can pop-up at any time based on suggestions from our members and so the Awards Coordinator position provides a wonderful opportunity to get to know more members in the club.

Email if you want to know more.

Keep on trakkin!
