December President’s Broadcast

Hello Trakkers!

Snow is starting to accumulate up north — and we couldn’t be happier! A December 18th trip is looking promising — keep watch on our web site and Facebook early next week page for updates. In the meantime, news this month re: Trakkers new masters training team, and new weekend trip option with the Halton Outdoor Club!

New Trakkers Masters Training Team!

This year we’re delighted to announce that the club will have a Trakkers training team for the Ontario Masters Cross-Country Championships which takes place in February in Parry Sound. A Master skier is anyone 30 years of age and over … and as cross-country skiing is a lifetime sport, this is a great opportunity to take part in a fun, competitive event. The championship offers 10- and 20km distances in both classic and skate skiing.

Jennifer Leavitt, one of our CANSI-certified ski instructors, has offered to lead a group of any Trakkers members interested in training together to prepare for the event. If you’re interested please don’t hesitate to contact her at masters@trakkers.ca.

Only a Few Spaces Left for Weekend Trips

Looking for an affordable winter getaway? Why not join one of Trakkers’ weekend trips? We had lots of interest in the trips at the recent Open House and there are only 3 spots left for Woolner House in Duntroon and 5 spots remaining for Blue Spruce in Huntsville. More details are available on our web site and if you’re interested please contact Henry Furlott, our Weekend Trips Coordinator.

New Weekend Trip Option — Ottawa Skiing Weekend with the Halton Outdoor Club, February 23-26, 2017

Our friends at the Halton Outdoor Club have graciously extended an invitation for Trakkers members to join in on their Ottawa trip in February! The bus will stop in Brockville on the way at the Triangle Ski Club. While in Ottawa, the bus will take skiers and snowshoers over to Gatineau on the Quebec side with its 50 groomed and track-set trails amounting to an impressive 190km. The club will also ski at Nakkertok Cross Country Ski Club with its 80km of groomed and wilderness trails.

Note: registration for this trip is required by January 2, 2017.

Cost: $560 per person double occupancy and $750 per person single occupancy, and includes return transportation by coach, transportation to ski areas, accommodation for three nights, three breakfasts, one dinner and one lunch, two full days of skiing, two half-days of skiing, all taxes, all gratuities, and all trail fees.

Please see Halton’s info sheet for registration details and more info.

Reminder: CANSI Ski Instructor Prep and Level 1 Course Dates Announced

Trakkers is looking to recruit and certify 2-3 new ski instructors this season in order to keep pace with demand for lessons. All Trakkers instructors are trained and certified by the Canadian Alliance of Nordic Ski Instructors (CANSI).

If you’re interested in taking your skiing technique to the next level and giving something back to the club, this can be a great way to do both — plus, there’s perks! You don’t need to know how to do both skate and classic ski techniques as CANSI offers certification for classic instruction only as well. For anyone who completes the Level 1 training and commits to teach with Trakkers for a period of time, the club reimburses the costs of the CANSI training and certification, and covers trail/bus fees while teaching as an incentive. Our instructors teach for approx. 90 mins on the morning of each of our Sunday trips, and then are free to get their own ski in through the afternoon.

Dates for the Level 1 preparatory and Level 1 certification courses:

Level 1 Preparation Course — December 17 — Highlands Nordic

  • This 1-day preparation course is designed to assess your cross-country ski technique and to provide you with feedback and fine tuning to ensure that you can ski at the required level before you attend the CANSI Level I certification course.

Level 1 Instructor Certification (February 25 & 26), Highlands Nordic

  • This 2-day (16 hours) course will introduce you to the fundamentals of cross-country (classic and/or skate) and the teaching technique. You will improve your demonstration skills and learn how to introduce new people to the sport.

If you’re interested, please email Anita Elash, our Ski School Coordinator.

Keep on trakkin!
